Is This Even Possible? - Traveling Solo to Mexico
I recently spoke about goals and accomplishments (personally and professionally). They are intertwined. I had traveled abroad in Europe during my time in the military. In doing so, I greatly appreciated other countries and cultures. Somehow, since being locked in my career, I lost track of what inspires me. Up to then, I had generally traveled in a group setting, which did not lead to creative thinking and problem-solving. I decided to change that and travel solo to Mexico. That mindset changed everything!
Solo travel can be a thrilling and empowering experience. It allows you to be completely independent and make your own decisions about where to go and what to do. It can also be a great way to challenge yourself and step outside of your comfort zone. When you’re traveling solo, you have the freedom to set your own itinerary and schedule, and you don’t have to worry about coordinating with anyone else. It’s a chance to be in the moment and truly and fully immerse yourself in the culture and experiences of the place you’re visiting.
Of course, solo travel also comes with its own set of challenges, and it’s important to be prepared and stay safe. But with a little planning and common sense, solo travel can be a rewarding and unforgettable experience.

An Idea Comes to Life - Obstacles of Traveling to Mexico
Are you afraid to trave to Mexico? I used to be afraid of traveling to Mexico. I had all these misconceptions about the country and its people. I thought it was a dangerous place full of drug cartels and violence. But I’ve since realized those ideas were based on stereotypes and media sensationalism.
Now, I don’t fear traveling to Mexico. I know that it’s a beautiful country with friendly people. And yes, some areas are unsafe, but there are also unsafe areas in the United States. It’s important to research your destination before you travel, no matter where you’re going. If you’re considering traveling to Mexico, don’t let your fears hold you back. It’s an amazing country with so much to offer.
I started planning, but there were apparent obstacles- How could I travel there cheaply, where would I go and stay, how could I communicate not knowing the language, would I be safe, and every other self-doubting thought imaginable? I started by researching the places I wanted to see the most. I would look at places to stay close to the sights I wanted to see. I planned bus routes to get from city to city to save money.
By the way, Mexico has very luxurious buses and nothing like we are used to here. I decided to fly out of Juarez, MX, instead of taking the more expensive options of using US flights. Then, I started my language-learning journey by teaching myself Spanish to be at least conversational. I did all this without any travel agency or guide’s assistance while there and being limited in speaking the language.
I Can't Believe I Just Did That - Is Mexico Safe to Travel?
I used to be one of those who would never dream of traveling to Mexico.
I had all sorts of preconceived notions about the country and its people, none of which were based on any real experience or knowledge. But then I decided to take the plunge and travel there myself, and I quickly realized that all my fears were unfounded.
Yes, some areas of Mexico are unsafe. But there are also plenty of safe places to visit, as long as you use your common sense and take precautions. The vast majority of Mexicans are warm, friendly people who are just trying to make a living.
So, if you’ve been thinking about traveling to Mexico but have been putting it off out of fear, I encourage you to go for it. It’s an amazing country with so much to offer, and I promise you won’t regret it.
The first step, I flew into Puerto Vallarta and traveled up to Sayulita. Moved my way over to Guadalajara and Ajijic. Continued on the bus to the Pueblo Mágico town of Taxco. Finally, ending up in Mexico City for a week before flying back to Juarez and taking a Uber back to the border into El Paso, Texas, to cross over. The experiences were filled with many complications, awkward moments, and several moments of unknowns.
However, using initiative and planning was an experience of a lifetime. Life-changing in many ways because it altered my thinking on what I want my future work life to look like. Oddly, it started as an idea and dream, and I look back at the videos/pictures with a sense of accomplishment. I did something I did not think I was capable of, and it changed me forever. Since then, I have traveled to Mexico non-stop and even lived there. Nothing has stopped me from my dream after taking that first step. What is your dream? What is holding you back from it?

But, it started by taking the first step. Sometimes we need to do something even if we are afraid. I have never been the same since Mexico, and I like the new me.
