The low cost of living in Mexico is perhaps the most attractive feature for those considering living in Mexico.
Though still more expensive than other parts of Latin America, Mexico has a lower cost of living than many parts of Europe and the United States, which can mean huge savings for people moving from another country to live here. Even those who move from other areas within the country will see a dramatic difference in their cost of living because food, shelter, gas, electricity, and water are all significantly cheaper than in metropolitan areas such as Guadalajara or Monterrey.

The Weather is Perfect - What is Life Like in Mexico
Imagine being able to pick your favorite climate and not have to worry about those snow winters again.
Picture yourself enjoying a beautiful beach day on a Fall day with no snow, sleet, or ice at all! In Mexico, you can do that! With beaches, highlands, mountains, and lowlands, you’ll be able to choose the perfect climate and weather to suit your needs. There’s something for everyone, from the Gulf of Mexico’s warm breezes to the highlands’ moderate temperatures or even the cooler mountainous regions.
Plus, many places don’t even require air-conditioning due to their elevation. Imagine the money you can save on electricity bills! My personal favorite locations are in central Mexico in the highland regions where the temperature is moderate year around. Some of my favorite places are Taxco, San Miguel de Allende, Queretaro, Guanajuato, Mexico City, Cuernavaca, Puebla, San Cristobal de Las Casas, Guadalajara, and the Ajijic (Lake Chapala area).

The People are Friendly
Mexico is Tranquilo!
It’s not the world-famous food, beauty, beaches, cathedrals, castles, or the Pueblo Magicos that made me want to stay in Mexico – It was the peace! From the start, I noticed the people were incredibly friendly. People are happy and willing to help me find my way around everywhere I go. I found out quickly that Mexican people have a personal responsibility when it comes to life. They take it upon themselves to make things work and find solutions, even if it means a bit of extra work.
This leads to an overall slower pace and allows us to experience a less stressful way of life. Mexican people are welcoming, and politics is not high on their list to debate. Now, if you want to talk about culture, food, or beautiful places, they will have strong opinions.
It is generally true that people in Mexico are friendly and happy. Mexico is known for its rich culture and warm, welcoming people. Many visitors to the country are struck by the hospitality of the locals, who often go out of their way to make sure that tourists and newcomers feel at home.
Additionally, Mexico is a country with a long tradition of celebrating life and enjoying the present moment, which contributes to a generally positive and happy atmosphere. However, it is important to remember that people’s personalities and attitudes can vary, and not everyone will necessarily fit this generalization.
Mexico boasts a friendly attitude towards expats, an unrivaled climate, and a noticeably low cost of living. Unfortunately, this may not be enough for expatriates who hold safety and security in high regard. Friendly locals help to push Mexico into the top spot for ease of settling in. Expat parents still fear for their children’s safety, despite being satisfied with childcare and education. Mexico ranks #3 for personal happiness in general, in spite of ranking #54 for safety and security. 77% of expats say moving abroad has made them happier (vs. 61% globally).
The Food is Delicious
Perhaps the number one reason most people love Mexico besides the low cost is the FOOD. Not just any food – world-famous food. I discovered that my definition of tacos and that of Mexico were much different. I am happy I learned that on day one. Tacos are corn/wheat tortillas filled with beans, rice, shredded meat, avocado, cilantro, onion, and salsa verde or hot sauce. And I thought they were a taco bell invention! A close second to food on the most favorite things about Mexico is the cultural attractions and history.

It's Safe
Is Mexico safe? Is the #1 question I get asked and may also be on your mind?
I can relate because years ago, before living in Mexico, I had the exact same concerns. Like any other country, you may want to avoid some places, stay alert of your surroundings with situational awareness, and practice normal safety practices. However, if you are like me and don’t put yourself in places and times of potential crime, you are more than safe. In fact, in all my traveling from coast to coast and North to South, I have never felt unsafe at any time.
How safe is it living in Mexico as an American? The answer to this question is that it can be quite safe with a few simple safety habits. Don’t walk around late after dark, keep your passport and money in a safe place, don’t flaunt expensive items, know your surroundings, and practice common sense. By and large, Mexicans hate crime and will always tell you the best practices. They love to see people enjoying their country that they are so proud of, and when you show respect for their culture, they will bend over backward to help you.
Mexico is generally a safe country to visit and live in, but like any other country, there are some areas that are safer than others and some safety concerns to be aware of. It is always a good idea to research the specific area you plan to visit or live in to get a better understanding of the local safety situation. In general, it is important to exercise the same safety precautions you would in any other country, such as avoiding walking alone at night in unfamiliar areas, keeping an eye on your belongings, and being aware of your surroundings.
Moving to Mexico Checklist
If you’re planning on moving to Mexico, there are a few important things you should do before you go to ensure that your move goes smoothly. Here are some items to consider adding to your moving to Mexico checklist:
Research the area you plan to move to. This will help you understand what to expect in terms of climate, culture, and amenities. I would even travel ahead of time to visit the various regions to see what fit is best for you.
Learn about Mexican laws and customs. This will help you understand what is and isn’t allowed in Mexico, and help you avoid any potential legal issues.
Obtain a visa. Depending on the length of your stay and the purpose of your visit, you may need a tourist visa, a temporary resident visa, or a permanent resident visa.
Arrange for a place to live. You may want to rent a temporary apartment or home while you get settled, or you may want to purchase a property. There are many reputable relocation specialists you can work with.
Contact your bank and credit card companies to let them know you will be moving to Mexico. This will ensure that your accounts are not frozen or flagged for potential fraud.
Have your important documents in order. This includes your passport, visas, birth certificate, and other important documents.
Consider purchasing international health insurance. This will ensure that you have access to medical care in Mexico.
Arrange for the transportation of your belongings. This may involve hiring a moving company, renting a truck, or shipping your items by plane or boat. You are able to do without transportation in most cities and towns in Mexico.
Notify the appropriate government agencies of your move. This includes the post office, the Social Security Administration, and the Department of Motor Vehicles.
Plan for your pets. If you have pets, you will need to arrange for their transportation to Mexico and ensure that they have all the necessary vaccinations and documentation.
Overall, moving to Mexico can be an exciting and rewarding experience, but it’s important to be prepared and plan ahead to ensure a smooth transition.
Reflections of My Decision to Live in Mexico
We highlighted just a few reasons to live in Mexico and have the quality of life you deserve but is it right for you?
Let me share a short moment when I knew it was right for me; perhaps you can relate. After seeing a majority of the widely recommended top places to see in Mexico – one day, I found myself lost (google maps said I wasn’t lost, but I was lost) somewhere in the hills of the town of Taxco. Wondering down narrow cobblestone streets, I stumbled upon a small plaza in a neighborhood with a church courtyard. No one was around, and it overlooked the beautiful mountains surrounding the city. It was November, and the weather was a perfect 70 degrees – I sat on a bench watching the pigeons flying in and out of the church steeple, and an older gentleman wondered by offering me a bottle of water.
After that, I didn’t see anyone else for the next hour or two, and I just sat there reflecting and enjoying the peace. It was a moment I cannot explain, but it wrapped up everything I felt about Mexico.
I knew then where I wanted to be – check that – where I was meant to be, Mexico. Where will you find your moment?!
Let’s remember our position as a quest in another country and do our best to speak and walk humbly with dignity and respect for our surroundings: we’re the ones coming here to visit or live our best lives, and we, like many people trying to get in another country – are appreciative of the opportunity.
