The History of Taxco
The city of Taxco is located in the state of Guerrero, in southwest Mexico. Taxco de Alarcón is the name of the municipality that encompasses the city known for its rich history, cultural heritage, and stunning colonial architecture.
The town was founded in the 16th century by the Spanish conquistadors, who established several mines in the region to extract silver and other minerals. In the 18th century, Taxco became a center of the silver trade, with several skilled craftsmen and artisans producing high-quality silver jewelry and other items. The city’s colonial architecture reflects its rich history, with many beautiful churches and other buildings dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. In recent years, Taxco has become a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors worldwide with its rich culture, history, and natural beauty.
It is believed that indigenous people inhabited the region around Taxco for thousands of years before the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century. The area was home to several indigenous groups, including the Nahuas, the Tlahuicas, and the Mixtecas.
Taxco is home to a beautiful, well-preserved colonial center with narrow cobblestone streets lined with colorful houses, churches, and plazas. One of the unique features is it is built upon the slope of the mountains raising over 5700 ft. The city’s main attraction is the impressive Santa Prisca Church, a Baroque-style cathedral built in the 18th century using the wealth generated from silver mining. Taxco has a long history of silver mining, dating back to the pre-Columbian era, and the city’s artisanal silverwork is renowned throughout Mexico.

How to Get to Taxco
By bus: The most common way to get to Taxco from Mexico City is by bus. Several bus companies operate regular service between the two cities, with buses departing from the TAPO bus terminal in Mexico City. The journey by bus takes approximately 3-4 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. It is a beautiful scenic ride on a luxury bus – enjoy the affordable ride. By car: Another option is to drive to Taxco from Mexico City. The journey by car takes approximately 3 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. You can either drive your car or rent a car in Mexico City.
By tour: Another option is to take a tour from Mexico City to Taxco. Many tour companies offer day trips or multi-day tours to Taxco, which include transportation, guided tours, and accommodation.
A Day in the Life of a Resident in Taxco
Life in Taxco is relaxed and laid-back, with a strong emphasis on community and family. The city has a small-town feel, with a tight-knit community of locals who are friendly and welcoming to outsiders. Daily life in Taxco revolves around the city’s central plaza, where people gather to socialize, shop, and enjoy the warm weather. The city is home to about 60,000 (100,000 surrounding area) people and is a popular tourist destination.
The pace of life is slow, and people take the time to enjoy their surroundings. There are plenty of things to do in Taxco, from exploring the city’s many churches and museums to hiking in the nearby mountains.
The weather in Taxco is pleasant year-round, with average temperatures ranging from 18-25 degrees Celsius (64-77 Fahrenheit). The rainy season runs from May to October, but even during this time, there are usually only a few hours of rain per day.

Things to Do and See in Taxco
There are many beautiful places to see in Taxco, Mexico. The city is home to a number of colonial-style buildings and churches, as well as a variety of shops and restaurants. Visitors can also enjoy a cable car ride up to Sierra Madre Mountains.

Visit the Casa Humboldt Museum: This museum is dedicated to the memory of Alexander von Humboldt, a famed German scientist who visited Taxco during his travels through Mexico. The museum contains a collection of Humboldt’s personal belongings and scientific instruments he used during his time in the country.
Explore the City Center: Taxco’s city center is a beautiful example of Spanish colonial architecture. Walk around and take in the sights of the old buildings, plazas, and churches. Don’t forget to stop by the local market for some souvenirs and enjoy strolling through the tianguis for your shopping needs. There are photo op opportunities at every turn.
Take a Cable Car up to La Quebrada: For breathtaking views of Taxco and the surrounding area, ride one of the town’s cable cars up to La Quebrada. On a clear day, you can see all the way to Acapulco!
Visit El Bulevar de Los Hechiceros: This stretch of road is lined with shops selling traditional Mexican folk art and handicrafts. It’s the perfect place to pick up some unique gifts or souvenirs.
In addition to the Santa Prisca Church, there are many other interesting places to visit in Taxco. The city’s surrounding hills offer breathtaking views of the valley below, and several hiking trails and viewpoints are popular with locals and visitors alike.

Taxco is Not Just a Pueblo Magico - It is Magic
I fell in love with Taxco before I even met her! It’s true – I was exploring where to travel next and saw one of the photos of the city and made it a mission to get there. Once I arrived – I knew I never wanted to leave. The only other time I have had that experience was visiting Guanajuato City which is a larger version (in my opinion) of Taxco.
