Mexico Travel - Steps to Plan Your Trip

A few years ago, I suddenly started traveling to Mexico, living there, and leaving the 9 to 5 behind me for good. I had never been to Mexico and didn’t know the language (Hola and Gracias don’t count).

Even though I live in the border town of El Paso, Texas – Traveling to Mexico seemed unrealistic, my passion kept growing until I finally went for it. Here are a few things I figured out along the way that made my travel easier. Hopefully, this will give you some inspiration for your next adventure.

  1. Choose your destination: Mexico is a vast and diverse country with a wide range of destinations to choose from. From the bustling cities to the sandy beaches and ancient ruins, there’s something for everyone. Consider your budget, interests, and the type of experience you want to have when deciding on your destination.

  2. Plan your trip: Once you’ve chosen your destination, it’s time to start planning the details of your trip. This includes booking your flights and accommodation, deciding on activities and excursions, and arranging any necessary visas or travel documents.

  3. Pack and prepare: Make a list of everything you’ll need for your trip and start packing a few days before you leave. Don’t forget important items like your passport, travel documents, and any necessary medications. It’s also a good idea to make copies of important documents and leave them with a trusted friend or family member in case of emergency.

With these three steps in mind, you’ll be well on your way to having an amazing trip to Mexico. Just remember to be flexible and open to new experiences, and you’re sure to have an unforgettable journey.

Planning a Trip to Mexico - Getting Started in 3 Easy Steps

When it comes to planning a trip to Mexico, there are easy steps you can take to make the process as smooth as possible. First, decide on your travel dates and book your flights. If you’re flying into Mexico City, consider booking a connecting flight to smaller airports like Cancun or Puerto Vallarta. This can often be cheaper and save you time on travel within Mexico. If you can fly from a Mexican border town into Mexico City, you can save even more. I pay less than $100 for round-trip flights into Mexico City just by flying out of Juarez, Mexico. Once in Mexico City, you can save even more by using one of the luxury buses to travel if you want to see the country and save use Reservamos.

Next, research accommodation options that fit your budget and preferences. There are plenty of hotels, hostels, and Airbnb’s in Mexico. For a truly authentic experience, stay with a local family in a homestay or rent an apartment in a Pueblo Magico.

Finally, start planning your itinerary by researching popular attractions and activities in the areas you will visit. Mexico is a large country with plenty to see and do, so it’s helpful to know what you want to do before you go. This will help you make the most of your time in Mexico and ensure an amazing trip!

Know all the places you will stay in Mexico for up to 180 days to list on the FMM paper slip – Do not lose the bottom section that will be returned to you, as you will need it when returning home.

3 Easy Steps to Travel MexicoKnow the exchange rate, when to negotiate the price, and when not. Learn the phrase “Voy a comparar” (I will compare) to open up negotiations. You don’t negotiate in restaurants or most food vendors. Check with locals about the best and safest means of travel outside the city you are staying in.

Travel and book rooms during the week (to save) even if you have extended stays. See our Recourse Page for help.

Eat delicious street food (which is everywhere) and save on your food costs. Crowded vendor spots are not a bad thing. Look for these places first. The locals know where the best spots are, and crowned places mean the food is GOOD!

Shop Tianguis (street markets) to save even more for the things you need. Cash is king in Mexico, but most restaurants accept VISA/MC.

ATM fees are costly, so one good alternative is having a brokerage debit account that refunds all transaction fees at the end of the month. I learned this the hard way on my first trip to Mexico.

You walk A LOT in Mexico, so have comfortable shoes and sunscreen due to the high-altitude locations in many places. I couldn’t believe how intense the sun was in Mexico! Sidewalks and roads in many areas are rugged cobblestones – watch your step. I slipped too many times, especially when it was wet.

Mexico is LOUD and full of Art and Culture with friendly people. Show courtesy and respect as a visitor to another country.

You will have some choices here. Do you want to do an all-inclusive package deal or shop around for the best deals for each? I talked about this in more detail HERE.

I have tried both ways, and each has its advantages. If this is your first time traveling to Mexico, I suggest an all-inclusive package. Fewer headaches and planning, right? Speak to someone with experience in these types of packages, or contact us for a free consultation. We can help plan your budget-friendly trip that is full of adventures or start with Google Travel.

Assuming you’re starting from the United States, the first step is to choose your mode of transportation. You can either fly or drive to Mexico. If you’re driving, you’ll need to cross the border at one of the land ports of entry. Once you’re in Mexico, you can either continue driving or take public transportation to your final destination.

If you’re flying, there are a few different airport options to choose from. Benito Juarez International Airport (MEX) is the closest airport to Mexico City. There are also airports in Toluca (TOL) and Queretaro (QRO), about 2 hours away from the city. Depending on where you’re going in Mexico, it might make more sense to fly into one of these airports instead, but you will want to compare prices as many times as it is cheaper to fly into Mexico City (CDMX) first.

Once you’ve arrived in Mexico, the next step is to get to your final destination. If you’re flying, this will likely mean taking a taxi, bus, or train from the airport. If you’re driving, you can continue with your car rental.

But how about those wanting to save money and experience the real Mexico? In that case, we got you covered. Since my first trip to Mexico, I have only traveled on a budget. You can experience many places that are not advertised and save hundreds of dollars. I look at an all-inclusive plan as a starter pack, and you will quickly realize there are more cost-effective ways to travel as you gain experience.

How to Plan your Itinerary - What to Do Once You're There

Some people like to wing it, and I do, too, to some extent. But if you have a well-thought-out plan and still set aside some time for the unexpected, which (ALWAYS) happens in Mexico, then you will be more prepared and have peace of mind.

Assuming you’ve already booked your tickets and packed your bags, there are just a few things left to do before you’re off to Mexico! Here’s a quick rundown of what you should do:

1. Get travel insurance. This is especially important if you plan adventurous activities while in Mexico.

2. Learn some basic Spanish phrases. Even if you don’t plan on speaking much Spanish while in Mexico, knowing a few key phrases will go a long way in making your trip more enjoyable.

3. Download any necessary apps. Whether you need a language translation app or want to find the best restaurants in town, make sure you have everything you need to be downloaded before you go.

4. Familiarize yourself with Mexican currency. You don’t want to be caught off guard when it comes time to pay for something!

5. Research popular tourist attractions in Mexico. While there’s plenty to see and do all over the country, it helps to have an idea of what you want to do before you arrive so that you can better plan your trip.
