How to Travel When You Have No Money!

What stopped you from traveling to Mexico?

Fear, time, or the high cost to travel? Maybe it was just the unknown. Or maybe, it was money. Let’s see a few ways you can Travel with no money. Okay, well, less money.

I know exactly how that feels and was in that position. I wanted to give up on that dream due to fear, cost, and lack of knowledge. You see other people traveling to Mexico or even becoming ex-pats there. How can that be? That’s for other people - not me! I will admit it; I was jealous. Well, I would like to tell you there is a blueprint you can follow to accomplish that dream, so- that’s what I will say to you. There is a way YOU can do this.

The best part is that it doesn’t have to break the bank – this post is meant to give you ideas for all types of travelers wanting to travel on a dime!

You Already Have Taken the First Step - Let's Plan it

A few different types of visas allow foreigners to enter Mexico, each with its own requirements and restrictions.

The most common type of visa for tourists is the Visitor’s Permit, which allows you to stay in Mexico for up to 180 days. If you’re planning on staying longer or working in Mexico, you’ll need to apply for a different type of visa. You can do this upon entry into Mexico. Be sure to keep the portion they return to you, as you will need that once you reenter the US.

To apply for a Mexican visa, you’ll need to fill out an application form and submit it along with any required supporting documents. Once your application is approved, you can pick up your visa at a Mexican consulate or embassy.

So much will depend upon your departure location and where you want to go in Mexico.

Let’s look at Airfare. On my first few times flying to Mexico, I used a US carrier, which substantially added to the cost of my trip. NEVER again!

I started thinking about how I could get around this obstacle. I started checking on prices if I flew out of a Bordertown in Mexico (Juarez) and was SHOCKED by the dramatic differences in prices.

You can save even more if you are flexible with dates and times! My experience flying with a Mexican Airline was the same as using a US Carrier. They have the same type of planes, snacks, and drinks and speak both Spanish and English with the announcements.

Where to Stay in Mexico

Forget about all-inclusive options. Remember, we are trying to save money here. Although All-Inclusive Packages saves a lot of headaches with arranging meals and lodging, you are paying extra for that convenience. Using Google, Booking.com, Expedia, and the like is the most cost-efficient way to compare many affordable options and negotiate amenities. Hostels and AR&B offer other options for us budget-conscious travelers.

If you want to travel to Mexico on a tight budget, there are a few things you can do to cut costs. First, consider traveling during the off-season. You can often find cheaper flights and accommodations during this time. Second, look for discounts and deals. There are often ways to get discounts on travel expenses if you know where to look. Finally, be prepared to spend some time researching your options and planning your trip carefully. By taking the time to do this, you can save a lot of money and still have an amazing experience in Mexico.

Where you stay will also affect your travel costs. Hostels are widely available throughout Mexico and start at around $10 per night for a dorm bed. If you’re looking for something a little more private, expect to pay upwards of $30 per night for a basic hotel room. Airbnbs are also becoming increasingly popular in Mexico, with prices starting at around $20-40 per night.

Getting Around Mexico on a Budget

When it comes to getting around Mexico on the cheap, there are a few options available to budget-conscious travelers. The first is to take advantage of the many bus services that operate throughout the country. Long-distance buses in Mexico are comfortable, safe, and relatively inexpensive, making them a great option for those looking to save money on transportation costs.

I used Uber to get around to many places in Mexico City for under $3.00 and did a lot of walking in other parts of Mexico. I mean an ALOT OF WALKING, which leads to the charm of exploring a new city.

Walking is -an effective way to explore the country. Plus, it’s good for your health and the environment!

If you need to travel longer distances or can’t walk, there are several other budget-friendly options for getting around Mexico. Public buses are often the cheapest option and can take you to many different destinations throughout the country. If you’re traveling in a group, car rentals can be a cost-effective option, especially if you split the cost with others.

I am a huge believer in traveling by bus from city to city in Mexico. The buses were luxury buses with reclining seats and personal TVs and beat flying.

Alternatively, you can use ride-sharing apps like Uber or Cabify, which can be more convenient and often cheaper than traditional taxi services.

When it comes to getting around Mexico on a budget, it’s all about being flexible and open to different options. With a little bit of planning and research, you can find the best way to get around that fits your budget and needs.

Traveling Mexico on a Budget

There you go!

Three ways to travel and stay in Mexico on a dime. Save on airfare, be flexible in booking your rooms, and travel by bus. With the low cost of eating in Mexico, you will save plenty and have many more opportunities to return with the money you saved. The first step is overcoming the fear of the unknown and having a plan.

It’s clear that traveling on a tight budget is possible with little planning and creativity. You can have a wonderful trip without breaking the bank by setting a budget and sticking to it, finding affordable accommodation, and eating and traveling on a budget.

Remember also to take advantage of discounts and deals, such as student discounts, off-peak travel, and loyalty programs. With a little bit of effort and resourcefulness, you can make your travel dreams a reality, no matter how much (or little) money you have. So don’t let a lack of funds hold you back – start planning your next adventure today!

Let’s remember our position as a quest in another country and do our best to speak and walk humbly with dignity and respect for our surroundings: we’re the ones coming here to visit or live our best lives, and we, like many people trying to get in another country – are appreciative of the opportunity. Thank you for having me, Mexico.
