Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or it’s your first time abroad, it’s important to be prepared for all the possibilities of crossing borders. In this blog post, we’ll share six essential tips for when you’re traveling internationally.

From packing tips to currency exchange advice, these tips will help ensure that your international trip is as enjoyable and stress-free as possible.

The Basics - Tips for Traveling Out of the Country

Quick Tips:

Traveling to Mexico can be a fantastic experience, but specific tips should be kept in mind when planning your trip. Here are some suggestions for traveling to Mexico that will help you make the most of your time and stay safe while you’re there:
1. Make sure you have valid travel documents. This means having a passport valid for at least six months after your return date and a tourist card (Forma Migratoria Multiple, or FMM).
2. Research your destination before you go. Learn about Mexican culture, customs, laws, and public safety information to prepare for any possible issues you may encounter during your visit.
3. Get travel insurance. This is especially important if you’re going to a remote area or planning to participate in high-risk activities.
4. Familiarize yourself with the currency exchange rate. Exchange a few pesos for U.S. dollars before you arrive in Mexico so you can purchase food or other necessary items until you get to an ATM.
5. Always keep your passport and other essential documents in a safe place. Make copies of your documents and store them in a secure location to have backups if they get lost or stolen.
6. Be aware of the local laws and customs. Obey the law and be respectful of others, so you don’t get into trouble while in Mexico.

Be Prepared - Travel Kit and Passport Safety

Make sure to carry a travel kit with you on vacation to include necessities such as medications. This will make it easy for you to stay healthy while away from home by having things like medicine and other essential items for your health. The last thing you want to happen is to become ill during your trip and ruin your plans.

Whether you’re going for a week or two on vacation or a business trip, make sure to travel prepared. My travel kit always includes my daily medications and vitamins. I don’t want to catch something while on the road, so I’m ready for anything! Even though the healthcare system in Mexico is outstanding, I would rather avoid that expense if possible. Including emergency contact information in your travel kit is also a good idea.

Always keep your passport handy – don’t put it in a safe or locker is what many recommend. However, I always keep mine safe because the last thing you will what to happen is to be stuck in a country with no passport.

Please take a picture of your passport and keep it on your phone, carry a passport card, and explain to any authorities that your passport is at the hotel for safety precautions.

I know it doesn’t sound safe being in a foreign country, walking around without a passport, and never knowing when you may have to identify yourself. But keeping your passport safe is a priority.

Get Travel Insurance

Having travel insurance is essential when traveling abroad.

There are many reasons why you should get it. First, it protects you against theft and accidents that could ruin your trip. Second, this type of insurance can cover unexpected costs such as medical expenses and transportation to the nearest hospital in case of a medical emergency and avoid delays in being seen by a medical provider. Third, it helps with any delays or cancellations that may happen with your flight due to weather conditions or other unforeseen circumstances.

Use and Update Helpful Apps

You can track your spending more quickly if you update the apps on your phone to the destination’s currency. Maybe change to Celsius as well. That way, it will be easier to check how much money you have left, so there are no surprises when it comes to the time to pay.

If you’re traveling, it’s a good idea to set your phone in the local currency so that your transactions are automatically labeled with their correct prices. Fiddling around with the exchange rates all the time is a hassle.

Use Google Maps offline mode if you’re driving or walking between places and don’t have a data connection. It’ll still give you directions and helpful information like the distance to your destination, what streets to take, and how long it’ll take to get there.

You can also download a map of your places of interest ahead of time and then use it anywhere – even on subways. I cannot tell you how helpful this hack was while traveling in remote parts of Mexico.

Do Your Research - When to Fly and Know About Where You are Going

The best time to book a flight is on Tuesday or Wednesday to save money. That’s because most people are looking for flights over the weekend, so you can find some deals if you have patience. I usually use a couple of various sources to compare prices. You can save even more by searching using our partner travel links. I first learned this scheduling trick from flight attendants – and now I confirm it works amazingly well! I have saved thousands of dollars by simply following this one travel hack. You can save even more if you are flexible with your return day.

Learn about the culture and customs of your destination, brush up on local laws, read up on tips and tricks from other travelers, and most importantly, find out about the climate of your destination. Preparing can help you avoid misunderstandings or legal trouble during your travels.

Credit Cards, ATMs, and Saving Money

Tips for TravelingIf you travel to another country, bringing your credit card from your home country is always a good idea. You don’t want to rely on just one or two cards when traveling because that could be risky if one of them gets lost or stolen.

I always bring my credit card from home, one from where I’m going, or an international card. In case anything happens, I always have a way to get money and communicate with people at home. You can save on ATM fees if you have a brokerage card. Check with your bank about international fees on withdrawals before you leave.

Traveling can be a stressful and terrifying experience, but it doesn’t have to be with a bit of preparation.
